PALMYRA, NY - FOUR FAMOUS CHURCHES

The Village of Palmyra in Wayne County, New York, is the only place in the United States with a major church on each corner of a main intersection.  Shown here, (looking northwest) at the corner of Main and East Canandaigua Street are (clockwise from bottom): Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian.

Another interesting point in these churches is that three of the four churches have women Pastors.

This postcard picture was taken by Don Hunt Aerials, Wolcott, NY.

I am planning on doing a post a week on each of these churches.  When I have completed them, I will do posts on the other churches in the village and area.

Hi Everyone,
Another reason for the fame of Palmyra is a church on the four corners. Thought it would be nice to a post on each of the churches. When that is done, I will do posts on the other churches in the village and local area.

Good Morning Vickie,

I think so , too. Another thing I forgot to put in is that three of the four churches have women Pastors.

Love visiting Palmyra, we always enjoy Palmyra Canal Days. The churches are all beautiful brick buildings with so much character, thanks for sharing the picture.

Your welcome for the picture,

This is indeed an interesting intersection with the four churches of varying architectural styles. The Presbyterian church with its white columns is stunning.

Marilyn -
I have been doing a good deal of geneaology research on my Mother side of the family & have traced my ancestors back to Palmyra & Macedon around 1740. I was very surprised & pleased that the Baptist Church and a couple of the cemeteries kept the most accurate and detailed records of early settlers and events such as births, deaths & marriages. I was so happy that someone bothered to records these significant dates over 250 years ago.
While I was born in Upstate NY and now live in Oregon, it is my dream to someday visit Palmyra and spend time with the town's historian & visiting the graves of my ancestors. Palmyra is a town rich in history, religion & education. I look forward to reading your posts on the historic four churches.
Thank you - Ellen

Hi Tom,
It is a very interesting intersection. I am going to try to do the Western Presbyterian Church first.

Hi Ellen,
Who were your ancestors in the Palmyra and Macedon area? We keep good historic information in this town. If you send me your e-mail address on lincolnlady1121@yahoo.com I can give you the name and address of our historian who might be able to help you.

You are more than welcome in Palmyra. If you are coming, please let me know. You will see a lot of historic places here and cemeteries here. Also, there are a lot nice folks in this town.

Hi Doreen,
I will start with the Western Presbyterian this coming Sunday. I decided to do them by age and the Presbyterian is the oldest, so that will be first. I found out a few interesting things about that church that I will put on the post.

Hi Folks,
I was down there today taking pictures of the churches. We are suppose to have bad weather coming and I wanted to get them while I could. So, like I said, the first church will be on Sunday.
